Badge celebrating 5 years of Hughston Homes as an employee-owned home builder

Hughston Homes is a 100% employee-owned home builder. Founded in Columbus, Georgia, in 1972, the company has been owned by its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) since 2021. Today, 101 employee owners build brand new homes in communities across Georgia and East Alabama.

Investing in a new home means trusting your builder with one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. So it’s fair to ask who that builder is, and who owns it. At Hughston Homes, the answer is everyone who works here. The person who answers your first phone call, the one who helps you select your finishes, your superintendent, and the person beside you at closing are all owners. So what does that mean for you?

What Is an ESOP? A Plain-Language Answer

An ESOP is a retirement plan that gives employees ownership shares in the company they work for. As an ESOP home builder, Hughston Homes is held entirely on behalf of its employees, not a handful of executives or outside investors. When the company does well, the people who design, build, and care for your home share in that success.

Employee ownership is less common than you might think. According to the National Center for Employee Ownership, only about 6,400 companies in the U.S. have an ESOP.

Hughston Homes History: A Columbus, GA Home Builder Since 1972

Edgar Hughston started building homes in Columbus in 1972. For two generations, Hughston Homes was a family-owned home builder. In 2021, the Hughston family chose to pass ownership to the people who had helped build it.

That decision didn’t change who we are. It widened the circle. The people here look out for each other, celebrate each other’s milestones, and pitch in whenever someone needs a hand. Now everyone at the table owns a share of what we build together.

“Being an employee-owner means taking pride in every home, every detail, and every person we serve.”

What began in Columbus now reaches across Georgia and East Alabama, from Auburn and Opelika to Newnan, Macon, Warner Robins, and the Augusta area. Wherever you build with us, decisions about your new home are made by people who live and work in the communities we serve.

How Does Employee Ownership Affect Build Quality?

Owners hold their work to a higher standard. When you own part of the company, every home carries a little piece of your name. A trim detail that needs another look or an item noted at your New Home Orientation becomes something you personally want to get right.

You’ll see it during site visits and at your New Home Orientation. Questions get thoughtful answers, follow-ups happen on time, and small things are handled before you have to bring them up. That care goes into every brand new home we build.

It’s also why more than 15 of our own employee owners have chosen to build their homes with Hughston Homes. They know the process from the inside, and they trusted it with the place they come home to every day.

Video summary: In this video, Hughston Homes employee owners share why they chose to build their own homes with the company they own. Seth Keller, Customer Care Manager and Hughston homeowner, relocated to Auburn, Alabama, and says the design process stood out most: selecting the flooring, wall colors, granite countertops, and cabinet finishes made the experience exciting. Lisa Bancer, Auburn/Opelika/Lee County Area Manager and Hughston homeowner, chose her Hughston home for its location, privacy, and floor plan, plus the chance to personalize every finish with a team there every step of the way.

Team members also talk about what keeps them here. They describe working alongside people, from the leadership team to the construction crews, who act with integrity, responsibility, and accountability and take pride in every home. For one team member, helping homebuyers through the process, whether it’s their first home or their seventh, is the whole reason for being here: “Getting to help them and make this a memorable and special experience, no matter how many times they’ve done it. That is 100% why I’m here.”

Will I Work With the Same Team From Start to Finish?

Yes, employee owners build their retirement through the company, so many choose to grow their careers here. For you, that means working with people you get to know rather than a rotating cast of names.

Employee-Owned vs. National Home Builders: What’s the Difference?

Many large national builders are publicly traded or investor-owned, with decisions made at a corporate office far from your neighborhood. Here’s how Hughston Homes is different:

  • Ownership: Held by employees through the ESOP, not shareholders or outside investors.
  • Decisions: Made by people who live and work in the communities we serve.
  • Accountability: The team building your home shares in the company’s long-term reputation.
  • Your process: Selecting your community, homesite, floor plan, and finishes works just the way you’d expect.

What Happens After Closing With an Employee-Owned Builder?

Your relationship with Hughston Homes continues long after you get your keys. Owners care about reputation, and a reputation is built one homeowner at a time. Your home warranty, Customer Care requests, and questions six months in get the same attention as your first visit to a model home.

Come Meet the Owners

The best way to understand the difference is to experience it. Stop by one of our model homes (no appointment needed, no pressure), walk through a brand new home under construction, and talk with the people who will build yours.

They’ll answer like owners, because they are. And they’ll welcome you the same way they welcome each other, because that’s who we’ve always been.
